ARPHS Demographic Profile - Census 2006

Public Health Intelligence and Infrastructure Auckland Regional Public Health Service (2008)

Foreword

I am pleased to present Auckland Regional Public Health Service’s Geographical Supplement to the Demographic Profile. This geographical supplement is intended to give a visual representation of the content of the demographic profile, a picture of the Auckland region based on the 2006 census data. We hope this supplement will be of particular use to service planning at the community and territorial authority level.

When data is considered at higher levels such as district health board boundaries there is a tendency for pockets of real need to be masked by the statistical overview. We hope this supplement will enable planners to consider community level engagement and target areas of disparity within the region’s borders.

The ethnic maps show the growth of Auckland’s diversity as well as the shift of ethnic groups to certain locations which can impact on the effectiveness on service delivery in both areas and help inform planning for the future. The age maps show clearly the population density of under 5’s within areas of South East Auckland, Waitakere, Papakura and Franklin and a more scattered diversity of over 65’s, all which carry service delivery implications.

Overall the geographical supplement is intended to highlight disparity which can aid service prioritisation and support the planning, delivering and monitoring of public health programmes and services in the Auckland region. We hope you find this of use but if you require further support in using the maps or require another perspective then please do not hesitate to contact us.
