The Auckland Regional Public Health Service contributes to the Non-Commercial Marine Biotoxin Monitoring Programme and the National Shellfish Sanitation Programme, to ensure shellfish gathered for commercial and recreational use is safe to eat.

Thinking of eating shellfish you have gathered from somewhere in the Auckland region?

  1. Check whether the area from which the shellfish are gathered is currently safe from toxic algal blooms (Algal blooms are a natural occurrence, not necessarily related to pollution.)
  2. Check whether the area from which the shellfish is gathered is currently safe from pollution (e.g. sewage or wastewater) by contacting an Environmental Health Officer at your local Council:
