Measles - Get Fit, Get Immunised

11th August 2009

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) is working with North Harbour Gymnastics Centre in Glenfield to provide information about measles to members of the public who visited the Gymnastics Centre on Monday 27th July and Tuesday 28th July.

Two gymnasts have become ill with measles. They attended training at the Gym on Monday 27th July and Tuesday 28th July. Members of the public may have been exposed to measles if they attended the Gym on either of these dates.

Measles is a serious viral infection that causes fever, cough, rash and sore eyes. Occasionally measles has dangerous complications and in some cases can be fatal. It is highly infectious. Immunisation against measles is the most effective way to prevent infection.

The gym is being proactive in contacting its members to provide them with relevant information if they start displaying symptoms, but are unable to contact everyone who attended the Gym on the 27th and 28th July. We strongly encourage members of the public who visited North Harbour Gymnastics Centre on the 27th or 28th July to refer to the North Harbour Gymnastics Centre website www.nhgym.co.nz further information or contact their family doctor or nurse if they suspect they have contracted measles, or unsure whether or not they are immune to measles.

“Its great that we are able to work so closely with community " says Dr Julia Peters
