Lucky shoppers in Glen Innes were treated to some tasty healthy treats at the launch of the ‘Glen Innes Healthy Kai’ campaign on Saturday at the Town Centre.
Children gobbled up the broccoli, carrots and cauliflower cooked in large woks by retailers wearing red aprons emblazoned with the slogan ‘love G.I, love healthy kai’.
Gayle Sinclair, Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS), says the day was a huge success.
“The ‘healthy kai’ poster was unveiled by Auckland City Mayor, Dick Hubbard,
and even he donned a red apron for the occasion,
” she says.
The carnival atmosphere continued well into the day with entertainment provided by Te Awhi Tangata Dance Group and local singer Denise Rikihana. Food vouchers for ‘healthy kai’ at local bakeries and takeaway shops were up for grabs in the ‘healthy kai quiz’ led by MC for the day, Mike Ikilei from Auckland City Council.
Glen Innes Healthy Kai is an example of a community pulling together to address nutrition related risk factors by making it easier to choose healthier food to eat at the Town Centre.
The ‘Glen Innes Healthy Kai Group’ comprises community representatives, Ruapotaka Marae, Ka Mau Te Wero, Glen Innes Primary School (Fruit in Schools), NZ National Heart Foundation, Procare Network Auckland, Hapai Te Hauora Tapui Ltd, Community Child Health and Disability Service, Tamaki Healthcare PHO, Auckland PHO, Total Healthcare Otara, Auckland City Council and the Auckland Regional Public Health Service.
