Tongan Gambling Research Report

This research project into problem gambling within the Tongan community commenced in December 2002 following concerns voiced among public health workers, Pacific Island community workers and other close networks. Their concerns were that some Tongan people were experiencing the hazards of gambling – not only financial loss but also a range of health and social problems. Vaka Ola, the Pacific Peoples’ group within the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) supported this project, with the aim of informing the public and policy makers of their needs. The particular processes for this study, based on a Tongan research methodology, enabled the researchers to identify and mobilise leaders within the community and to initiate interest in the development of a co-ordinated approach to address gambling in the Tongan community.
