State of Public Health in the Auckland Region 2006

The report, entitled Improving health and wellbeing: A public health perspective for local authorities in the Auckland region, is the second in the State of Public Health in the Auckland Region series of reports produced by the Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS). The first was He pūrongo Hauora o ngā Iwi Māori I te Rohe o Tamaki Makaurau – a report on Māori Public Health in the Auckland Region, and presented quantitative indicators pertaining to Māori in the Auckland region across the six dimensions of Te Pae Māhutonga and disease incidence and prevalence.

A workshop based on this report was held on 12 December 2006. A full report on the workshop is now available. Copies of the presentations can be downloaded from the Public Health and Urban Development Workshop page.

The purpose of the report is to do the following:

  • provide a review of the health of the population in the Auckland region using key indicators
  • provide improved access to information at territorial authority (TA) level
  • identify public health priorities
  • provide a tool for monitoring public health trends in the Auckland region
  • inform planning processes (e.g. LTCCPs)
  • foster partnerships with local government.

The report consists of two parts. The first part of the report provides contextual discussion to facilitate better understanding of a population-wide (or public health) approach across three focus areas for the Auckland region:

  • urban development
  • transport
  • food, drink and tobacco.
  • The second part of this report outlines forty-five health and wellbeing indicators that provide a benchmark for future monitoring and give a snapshot of key public health data.
