Liquor licensing

ARPHS works towards reducing alcohol related harm in the community. Licensed premises are one venue where we can make effective changes by working with licensees and providing them with the necessary information and support to become responsible hosts.

To achieve the aim of reducing alcohol related harm, we work closely with other reporting agencies, Police and the District Licensing Agency. These relationships are essential in monitoring and enforcing the Sale of Liquor Act 1989.

We also have a statutory responsibility under the Sale of Liquor Act 1989 to investigate all On-licence and Club Licence liquor applications on behalf of the Medical Officer of Health. A Public Health Questionnaire is one tool used to investigate the establishment. Once we are satisfied with our investigations a report is sent to the District Licensing Agency.

ARPHS staff conduct night visits to licensed premises to assess host responsibility practices such as ensuring food and safe transport options are available and alcohol is not served to intoxicated patrons.

Licencees can complete an online form to request signs and literature. This material is also available at ARPHS Resource Centres.
