Food Safety

Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) Food Safety Team provides a range of services aimed at promoting food safety to the food industry and the public. It ensures regulatory food standards are met.

The Food Safety Team evaluates food safety programmes submitted by food businesses and recommends approval to the New Zealand Food Safety Authority (NZFSA). More information can be found on the NZFSA website.

ARPHS also investigates food complaints notified by the public. It investigates these complaints with the implicated food manufacturers and reports the findings back to the complainant. Sometimes the food complaint investigation can result in the recall of the affected food. The Food Safety Team provides guidance and supervision to the food manufacturers undertaking the recall. It also undertakes audits of food recalls to ensure that all affected food is recovered from the market.

Premises that distribute food off-site will require additional approval from our office.

The Food Safety Team also undertakes food surveillance and monitoring projects in conjunction with the NZFSA. You can visit the New Zealand Food Safety Authority web site for reports on latest projects.

The Food Safety Team has an officer on duty to answer queries from consumers and provide technical food safety advice to the food industry and the public. You can contact us on (09) 623 4600 and ask for the Duty Food Officer.

Downloads. ARPHS no longer publishes the Food Safety and Imported Products Advice. This has been replaced by a newsletter called “4 degreesC” that is published by NZFSA along with other food safety publications.
