Auckland Regional Public Health Service supports Pacific Island communities with a programme to encourage healthy eating initiatives in pre-schools.
Kai for Pacific children/Kai Lelei Healthy Eating Programme focuses on Pacific Island Early Childhood Education Centres (ECEC) mainly in South Auckland. This programme is in collaboration with the Counties Manukau District Health Board –‘Let’s Beat Diabetes’ campaign and the Ministry of Health.
The programme focuses on promoting and improving awareness of healthy foods provided to preschool children as prepared at home or served in the childhood centres. This is done through education and healthy food guidelines offered to both families and ECEC staff. Through ongoing training, education and support, the programme will assist children to establish and maintain healthy eating through to adulthood and therefore, reduce the incidence of diabetes and obesity related illnesses.
