National Cervical Screening Programme - Auckland Region
The Ministry of Health's National Screening Unit (NSU) contracts ARPHS to undertake a range of activities for the Auckland and Northland regions as part of the National Cervical Screening Programme (NCSP). One of the main roles for ARPHS is to manage the NCSP-Register.
The aim of the NCSP is to reduce the incidence and mortality rate of cervical cancer among women within New Zealand by the early detection and treatment of pre-cancerous squamous cell changes.
The NCSP Auckland region covers from Pukekohe in the south to Cape Reinga in the north, and includes the islands of the Hauraki Gulf and Northland. As the largest regional service provider, the NCSP Auckland Region has over 350,000 women enrolled. Annually this means the processing of around 160,000 cervical cytology and histology test results.
Key service activities include:
- The processing of all cervical cytology and histology test results into the NCSP-Register for those women enrolled in the National Cervical Screening Programme.
- Providing smear history information to women, smeartakers, treatment providers and laboratories.
- Notifying women by letter of an abnormal test result and also notifying the woman if she becomes overdue for her next smear result - please see http://www.nsu.govt.nz/Current-NSU-Programmes/564.asp for more information about this.
- The distribution of NSU approved cervical screening resources such as pamphlets, brochures and information for women.
- Working collaboratively with the National Screening Unit, women, community groups and other screening service providers.
The NSU is developing a new register which will be centralised in Wellington and as from January 2008 the NCSP Auckland Region will be taking on a Regional Co-ordination role.
